Bolt Thrower - Who Dares Wins [Compilation] (1998)

 

Bolt Thrower were formed in September 1986 as a thrash/punk band, influenced largely by bands such as Slayer, Crass and Discharge. The band was founded by bassist Gavin Ward and guitarist Barry Thomson in a Coventry pub toilet during a hardcore punk gig. Shortly thereafter Andrew Whale and Alan West joined on drums and vocals respectively. In April 1987 the In Battle There Is No Law demo was recorded with this line-up.

Their second recording was the Concession of Pain demo, which they made in September 1987. Gavin had switched to guitars and they recruited Alex Tweedy to play the bass. However, Alex did not show up for the recording, and so Gavin played both guitar and bass for the demo. Two weeks after the recording session, Gavin's girlfriend Jo Bench replaced Tweedy.

With this line-up they recorded their first Peel session on 3 January 1988, with John Peel, the alternative disk jockey of BBC Radio One. He had received their second demo and became enthusiastic about the band. They recorded four tracks for it, resulting in a deal with Vinyl Solution to release one album. Just before the recording of their first full-length album, they replaced their singer with their driver Karl Willetts. Their debut LP, In Battle There Is No Law is only a half hour in length and has a primitive and raw sound often categorized as grindcore.

They were not satisfied with the deal with Vinyl Solution as it was a pure hardcore label at that time. The label did little promotion for Bolt Thrower and their blend of death metal and hardcore punk, so after one album Bolt Thrower decided to leave Vinyl Solution and were signed by Earache Records.

 The production of their second album Realm Of Chaos album was poor, though it was an improvement on previous attempts. The artwork was created by John Sibbick under contract for Games Workshop for a gaming supplement they produced with a similar name to the album Bolt Thrower was about to release. After Games Workshop heard the recording of the songs for Bolt Thrower's second Peel session, which was recorded on 6 November 1988, they offered to do the expensive artwork for Bolt Thrower's album, an offer the band quickly accepted. The record was released in 1989 with the title of Realm of Chaos and with the subtitle Slaves to Darkness. Most of the lyrics to the songs were also influenced by the game, but not merely because of the deal with Games Workshop. Karl, Andy and Gavin were very much into the games Games Workshop produced and they wrote a couple of songs about these games. Some obvious examples are "Plague Bearer" and "World Eater". Most lyrics can however be projected on war, the general theme Bolt Thrower uses. After the recording of Realm of Chaos, they went on the Grindcrusher Tour with labelmates Napalm Death, Carcass and Morbid Angel. On the Cenotaph EP one song ("Realm of Chaos") appears that is recorded during this tour. This EP also features the two CD-bonus tracks from War Master and Realm of Chaos plus the song "Cenotaph".

In November 1998, Earache Records released Who Dares Wins, a compilation featuring various older recordings, including the Spearhead and Cenotaph EPs. The band members themselves do not approve of the compilation's release and warn not to buy it, considering it a cheap cash-in from Earache. Originally, it was titled No Guts - No Glory but the title was changed because one song on Mercenary has the same title and Metal Blade objected.

Martin "Kiddie" Kearns, who had been Bolt Thower's drummer from 1994 to 1997 and again since 2000, died unexpectedly at the age of 38 on 14 September 2015. As a result of his death, Bolt Thrower went on hiatus and cancelled their upcoming Australian tour, which would have been their first since 1993.

On 14 September 2016, the first anniversary of Kearns' death, Bolt Thrower announced on their website that they would not continue, explaining, "We spent over 20 years together, touring the world, with 3 different vocalists, but he was so much more than just a drummer to us. So when we carried his coffin to his final resting place, the Bolt Thrower drummer position was buried with him. He was, and will now forever remain The Bolt Thrower drummer, our Powerhouse and friend Martin 'Kiddie' Kearns." Rumours of the band's break-up were confirmed two days later by frontman Karl Willetts, stating, "I can confirm that Bolt Thrower are definitely over for good. There will be no reunion tours etc... no compromise."

On 7 March 2017, which would have been Kearns' 40th birthday, Bolt Thrower posted a lengthy statement on their website, which suggested that a reunion or possible new release in memory of Martin Kearns is in the works.

This release coincided with the release of the album "Mercenary", Bolt Thrower's first album for Metal Blade Records. The band have since accused Earache of trying to cash in on the band since departing the label. Also, the album was originally intended to be titled "No Guts, No Glory"; however, because that is the title of a song on "Mercenary" Earache had to scrap that title. The band recommends not to buy this as they would never agree on releasing a compilation album.

Originating from Spain's capital Madrid in 1998, Wormed immediately made an impact in the death metal scene with the release of their 'Floating Cadaver in the Monochrome' MCD (1999). Following a promo CD under the title 'Voxel Mitosis' (2001), the first studio album 'Planisphaerium' received high acclaim by critics and fans alike in 2003. In the wake of their debut full-length, the Spanish received invitations to international festival shows and touring around the globe. Wormed performed in Japan alongside Goratory and Vomit Remnants and afterwards hit Europe with Malignancy and Despondency.
 A creative hiatus, partly due to line-up changes and filled with re-issues of their previous released as well as the single 'Quasineutrality' (2010) finally ended, when their sophomore album 'Exodromos' came out in 2013. On their third full-length 'Krighsu' (2016), the fast-rising Spanish Sci-Fi tech death prodigies are telling a dystopian cosmic story with lyrics and music joined into an overarching concept. Its intense brutality, dissonant dynamic riffing, and tremendous heaviness combined with an amazing futuristic concept, which introduced the character Krighsu - last human in the cosmos, harvested top reviews and saw Wormed headlining in the US and co-headlining in Europe.

Kulto Maldito - En La Guerra Kon El Diablo [EP] (2012)

Kulto Maldito tiene origen en el 2002 año de Satanás, primero solo en idea en los oscuros designios de Belial, vocalista y líder de la horda, todo con la maldita intención de crear un metal maldito, satánico y directo a la vena.
En el 2003 se crean las primeras descargas de este engendro de Satán sin poder estos concretarse, se pospone todo hasta el 2004 y se busca guerreros para empezar esta maligna visión anticristiana ya con 4 blasfemias creadas, pero es solo hasta el 2005 ke estas bestias infernales se juntan y dan comienzo a la destrucción.
Hell Tormentor en la batería, Grand Force Misteria en la guitarra, Groteske Murderer from Hell en el bajo crean su demo homónima en el 2006.
N.O.D.D. (Nueva Orden del Diablo) el nuevo demo sale a mediados del 2007, y ya con una alineación estable a finales de Agosto 2007 es terminado el que será el primer full CD de la horda “Kulto a la Bestia”, editado por Obliteration Records de Japón.

Dissenter - Bloodlust & Blasphemy (2000)

 

Previously known as Bloodlust (1989 - 1996). The band changed it's name to Dissenter in 1996.

1996 - that year after Bloodlust suspended its acitvity, Dissenter was born.

1997 - ''Moral Insanity'' first demo tape recording and two successive tracks titled ''Moral Insanity" and ''The End'' which as ''Dissenter II'' were firmed by Seven Gates Of Hell.

1999 - ''Novum Vox Mortis'' released composition CD ''Disco's Out, Slaughter's In'', where recordings from the second demo were set.In summer 1999 the band recorded the material for their debut album "Bloodlust and Blasphemy". "Novum Vox Mortis" showed its interest to release the Dissenter's debut but preliminary assignations turned out to have finished because Novum Vox Mortis suspended and ended its activity.

2000 - participation in second edition of "Obscene Extreme" festival in Trutnow . "For Kill my Pain" video clip recording. Due to Dariusz Sebastianski, "Bloodlust and Blasphemy" record came out. The video clip has been attatched to the record.

2001 - a promotional period of "Bloodlust&Blasphemy" as well as new tracks preparation,which were later recorded in Hertz studio in Bialystok.

2002 - a contract with Empire Records and "Apocalypse of the Damned" was released. 2002 Thrash'Em All Festival the band took part in . In the West "Apocalypse of the Damned" was released by Cold Blood Industries. The concerts planned in the Netherlands and Belgium were canceled because of personal problems within the band. Heter left the band and Stoker and Rob joined Dissenter.

2003 - "Contamination"(Empire Records) was released. Members of the band are: Garbaty, Mlody, Stoker, Rob. The band guested 2003 Empire Invasion Tour. Crash Music (USA) took promotions in their hands.

2005 - the band entered Hertz studio again where "Furor Arma Ministrat" was recorded. That is the next time when the record came out thanks to Empire Records.

2006 - Dissenter took part in Vital Brutality Tour supporting Vital Remains (+Trauma, Forlorn Legacy, Resurrecturis). Jacek Grecki (ex-Lost Soul) joins the band. Rob is getting ready for his last activity with Dissenter on upcoming album (guest solos). Stoker & Mlody start their another band - F.A.M.

Tourniquet - Where Moth And Rust Destroy [Promo] (2003)

Tourniquet was formed in Los Angeles in 1990. Nineteen albums later, the members of Tourniquet remain committed to creating intense music. Drummer and main songwriter Ted Kirkpatrick’s passion for classical music and technical metal finds its way into many Tourniquet songs, resulting in their music being described as “Beethoven Meets Frankenstein”. Ted Kirkpatrick:

A founding member of Tourniquet, drummer, songwriter and lyricist. Ted Kirkpatrick’s aggressive, musical, and often unorthodox approach to drumming has been recognized by thousands - critics and fans alike. Ted began playing drums at age 12. By age 14, Ted was playing drums along with the records of many of his early influences, bands like Rush, King Crimson, and ELP. He holds a business degree from the University of Texas, Austin, where he graduated with honors.

Entirely self taught, he began to develop his own unique drumming style through a variety of influences. He is a great admirer of the classical masters and has attended countless classical concerts, and his drumming and songwriting are influenced by the power of Beethoven and Mahler symphonies, the staccato bursts of Scarlatti’s harpsichord sonatas, and the counterpoint of Bach’s fugues, to name a few. His latest solo release (2010) In The Shadow Of The Masters features Ted drumming to classics by Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Chopin, Paganini and others.
