Autopsy - Severed Survival (1989)

Severed Survival is the debut album by Autopsy released in 1989. This album somewhat continues in the style of Reifert's former band Death. Lyrically the band thrives heavily on horror, death and gore concepts; nevertheless these are not inspired directly by horror movies, although the title track is based on Stephen King's short story "Survivor Type." The album was very influential for future death metal acts such as Cannibal Corpse, Entombed, and Dismember. It was also a pioneer of gore lyrics. The album features Steve DiGiorgio on bass.

Various re-releases exist with different bonus tracks and bonus CDs. Furthermore, a different cover exists for this album, which depicts the point of view of the person receiving the autopsy.

The album is notable for its bass sound which was mixed much higher than all the other tracks.

To coincide with the album's 20th anniversary, Peaceville Records released a special two-disc edition of Severed Survival on February 23, 2009. It includes rare rehearsal and live material for a bonus disc as well as demo versions of two songs — "Mauled to Death" and "Human Genocide" — which did not make the final cut on the original album. Also featured in the package is a booklet with notes by the band themselves, detailing the history of Autopsy's early years, with rare photos and images. The reissue also includes two new Autopsy tracks that were recorded in September 2008, and are included on the reissue's second disc.

Autopsy - Severed Survival (1989) Reissue 2CD [2009]

One of the early death metal acts and no stranger to controversy over the years, Autopsy formed in 1987 in San Francisco and released 4 albums on Peaceville Records before disbanding in 1995 and going on to form Abscess.

The band notably features legendary drummer Chris Reifert, who began his recording career with US metal greats, Death, before taking on the unusual duty of handling drums and vocals for Autopsy. Autopsy has influenced a whole generation of extreme metal bands, from Entombed and Dismember to Darkthrone.

Severed Survival” is (rightly) hailed as one of death metal's finest releases. A completely rotten and uncompromising sound - dirty, sludgy, death and doom metal mixed in with repulsive tales of death and disease - it was originally released in April 1989.

SWR FEAST 29-30 April 2022 -|- BARROSELAS, PORTUGAL

On 25 April 1998, the Steel Warriors' Rebellion saga began in the north of Portugal, in the very peaceful village of Barroselas. A festival that grew from the underground, based on the do-it-yourself concept and eager to make a difference, whether in the care for artistic content and visual aesthetics, the desire to maintain a familiar atmosphere and the will to do something special and peculiar.

Initially founded as a studio project by singer and multi-instrumentalist M. After the release of With Hearts Toward None in 2012, Mgła started to play live shows employing guest musicians apart from the official drummer Darkside; M. sings and plays rhythm guitar.

Equaleft are a groove death metal band from Porto/Gaia ,(Portugal) that were born in 2004 .
Their sound is equal to
metal combined with a massive dose of groove, power and some melody.

Sijjin is a Death Metal band, based in Berlin, the band was formed in 2019 and two of their three components are Spanish (Basque Country). The band plays a primitive Death Thrash influenced mainly by bands like Morbid Angel, Death, Possessed, Sadistic Intent, Necrovore or Incubus. They have released a demo the same year of their creation and their debut album will be released in November 2021 by the Voz Sepulcral label with the title of ''Sumerian Promises''. The name of the band refers to the Islamic belief of a prison, a vehement torment or narrow circumstances at the bottom of Jahannam: Gehenna or Hell.

Autopsy were founded in the late '80s by Eric Cutler and Chris Reifert, the latter of whom had just parted ways with pioneering Florida death metallers Death. Employing a caustic blend of thrash, doom, and death, the band released a string of influential albums like Severed Survival (1991) and Mental Funeral (1991) before shutting down operations in 1995. The group reconvened in 2010.

Formed in Växjö in 1992, Birdflesh is one of the craziest grindcore acts around. Their take on grindcore is filled with strong thrashy influences, wacky lyrics, humorous music and a funny atmosphere overall.

The band usually performs live with props and costumes.

As they gained the status of “cult band” in the grincore scene, the live activity took the band on the greatest stages for extreme metal, such as Obscene Extreme Festival, Maryland Deathfest, Neurotic Deathfest and many more.

Autopsy - Dead As Fuck [live] (2004)

Autopsy was formed in August 1987 by Chris Reifert and Eric Cutler, shortly after Reifert's departure from Death. The band recorded a demo that year, Demo '87, before Danny Coralles joined in 1988 immediately prior to the recording of their second demo, Critical Madness, and along with Reifert and Cutler, would be a constant in the band's lineup. The band signed to Peaceville Records and released their debut album, Severed Survival in 1989. These early recordings featured a straightforward thrash-influenced death metal style in a similar vein to Scream Bloody Gore era Death (Reifert was Death's drummer on that album), but the band adopted a slower, doom metal influenced sound for their next release, the 1990 Retribution for the Dead EP. The next full-length, Mental Funeral, continued in this style and has since been cited by many other death metal musicians (particularly in the Swedish scene) as particularly influential. Having completed a successful European tour soon after Mental Funeral, the band reentered the studio to record the Fiend for Blood EP, which was followed by their third full-length, Acts of the Unspeakable, which featured shorter songs and a more grindcore influenced sound. A difficult US tour in 1993 led to the decision to disband Autopsy after the recording of a final album. Shitfun, released in early 1995, was heavily influenced by hardcore punk and would prepare fans for Abscess, previously a side project of Danny Coralles and Chris Reifert which would become their main band after Autopsy's demise.

Autopsy was featured in the 2005 music documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey when the film's narrator and star, Sam Dunn read aloud a verse from the band's song "Charred Remains".

Frontman Chris Reifert contributed a recipe for Mummified Jalapeño Bacon Bombs to Hellbent for Cooking: The Heavy Metal Cookbook, by Annick Giroux (Bazillion Points Books).

After several years of speculation regarding an Autopsy reunion, and denial of the possibility, the band members briefly reunited in September 2008 to record two new tracks for the special edition of their 1989 debut Severed Survival. They later reconvened to the Maryland Deathfest in 2009. Following Abscess splitting up in June 2010, Autopsy immediately announced that they had permanently reunited. They released a new EP, The Tomb Within, in September 2010 and Macabre Eternal, their first studio album in 16 years, in 2011.

Along with fellow Bay Area band Possessed and Reifert's previous group Death (which Chuck Schuldiner relocated to Reifert's Bay Area hometown of Concord in 1986), Autopsy have been considered a pioneering band in the death metal and Doom/Death genres. Early genre stalwarts like Entombed, Dismember, Gorefest, Immolation, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide have all credited Autopsy as an influence in their sound.
