Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice (2004) Repress [2015]

French black metal band formed in 1998 in Poitiers. The demo Disciples Of The Ultimate Void was released by Drakkar Productions in 1999. Initially, Deathspell Omega produced raw, traditional black metal akin to Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger. However, their 2004 release, Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice, marked a change to a vastly more technical, experimental, and well-recorded sound featuring such musical influences as Russian Orthodox chanting and choral music. Their lyrical content deals primarily with Satanism on a metaphysical level  as the band has stated that "all other interpretations of Satan are intellectually invalid" and other various theological topics. They have also released a trilogy of concept albums which focus on the theological aspects of God, Satan and man's relationship with the two.

The band's work after Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice has been even more experimental and technical, with their output in 2005, Kénôse, "Mass Grave Aesthetics" and "Diabolus absconditus" totaling nearly eighty minutes in length, longer than Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice.

There is little to no concrete information about Deathspell Omega's lineup, they do not have any official website, social media platform or promotional photos, have never performed live and do not list credits in their releases. Finnish musician Mikko Aspa is most commonly cited as the vocalist. It is known that Hirilorn vocalist Shaxul was Deathspell Omega's vocalist until 2002, and has gone on record as leaving due to displeasure with the band's shift in themes.

Early interviews were deeply critical of the black metal scene, and the last interview they agreed to until 2019 was conducted by their North American label The Ajna Offensive, with questions and answers sent through the band's exclusive label, Norma Evangelium Diaboli, to preserve their identity. In a 2018 interview with Loudwire, Tobias Forge, lead singer of the band Ghost, stated that the French synthwave artist Carpenter Brut (Franck Hueso) was Deathspell Omega's producer.

VA - Crushing The Holy Trinity (Deathspell Omega, Stabat Mater, Musta Surma, Clandestine Blaze, Mgla, Exordium) 2005

Musta Surma

Musta Surma is the aftermath of Crimson Evenfall (R.I.P.) which worked from `94 to `97. The line-up was Thyrgrimmr: voice, drums, synth , Strigoi Mort:guitars , Krieg: bass. The band did demos called "Nocturnal Storms of Infinity" (`96) , "Winterheart" (early`97) and "Ad Inferos Ante Christum Natum" (autumn`97). They got great response in the underground. In the end of `97 Krieg left the band, so Thyrgrimmr and Strigoi Mort, masterminds behind C.E., decided to rename the band to be Musta Surma.

Musta Surma  recorded "Demo 97" in December and it was released in January ´98. That tape got very good response from the black metal underground.

The musical basis of M.S. is same like C.E., pure and aggressive Black Metal, in the vein of old Scandinavian black metal gods, but rawer and uglier way than C.E. ever did. There is no place for synth, beautiful melodies etc for sure! All lyrics of M. S. are written in Finnish and the main goal is clear; they are sword against the Christianity.

M.S. recorded three new songs in December ´98 and after all delays and problems MCD called "Riena" was released May `99. Also Surma Productions was founded for our self-financed release(s) at the same time.

In December `99 M.S. and one of the most honourable Finnish Black Metal horde Horna gathered their powers and recorded split-EP for the French End All Life productions. That vinyl was released in April 2000. The song "...And heaven fell" was recorded in August `00 for EAL compilation LP called "Black Metal Blitzkrieg". It was released in February ´01. English lyrics in this song are exception in common
Musta Surma line, in the future we´ll blaspheme in Finnish again.

Mgła

Initially founded as a studio project in the year 2000 at Kraków by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mikołaj "M." Żentara with the collaboration of drummer Dariusz "Daren" Piper, both originally from the band Kriegsmaschine, together they recorded two unreleased demos, a collaboration split album with Deathspell Omega, Clandestine Blaze, Stabat Mater, Exordium and Musta Surma and their first 2 EPs. Daren left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Maciej "Darkside" Kowalski. The band signed to Northern Heritage Records in 2008 and released their debut album Groza in that same year, Mgła has been signed to Northern Heritage ever since.

In 2012 after the release of With Hearts Toward None the band started touring worldwide, they enlisted bassist The Fall and guitarist Silencer, originally from Black metal band Medico Peste, to complete their live lineup and according to M. rehearsed for over a year before hitting the road. In 2015 Silencer left the band and was replaced by E.V.T., also from Medico Peste, as live guitarist. The tour, which helped the band to gain notoriety, had various notable performances at well known metal festivals like Nidrosian Black Mass on Belgium, Brutal Assault on the Czech Republic and Dark Easter Metal Meeting and Party San on Germany. During the same year M. and Darkside created "No Solace"; a label and mailorder in which they catalogue the music from Mgła and other projects. Through "No Solace" M. and Darkside also release music under the Kriegsmaschine moniker. No Solace is also the name of Żentara's music studio. From 2015 to 2016, the band's lineup joined Mikko Aspa's Clandestine Blaze for various shows.
