Chakal & Mutilator & Sarcófago & Holocausto - Warfare Noise I [split] (1986) 2xLP Reissue [2013]

C H A K A L

Chakal was formed in early 1985 in Minas Gerais by William Wiz (drums), Destroyer (bass), and Mark (guitars). With the addition of Sgôto on vocals, the band made their first live appearance at the "Metal BH II" festival on December 10th, 1985. Other bands who performed at the festival included Sagrado Inferno, Armmagedon, Sepultura, and Minotauro.

In 1987, the band released their Abominable Anno Domini LP, and began a successful career throughout Brazil, with concerts in Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and Recife.

In 1990, the album The Man His Own Jackal was released, which demonstrated more complex song structures, riffs, and lyrics. While those in Brazil praised the creative effort, international critics questioned and criticized the band's originality.

In 1993, on their Death Is a Lonely Business album, the band flirted with a death metal-oriented sound. After a period of inactivity, they became active again in 2000 with Deadland, which marked the return of the vocalist Korg.

M U T I L A T O R

Formerly known as Desaster, but changed their name to Mutilator before releasing their first demo.

According to Rodrigo Neves, Mutilator went on hiatus in 1993 and the 2001 reunion was only a false restart.

Reunited for E Aí Cara? Metal Fest on April 7th, 2018 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This is a permanent reunion, according to Ricardo Neves.

S A R C Ó F A G O

Guitarist and growler Wagner Lamounier (Antichrist to his friends) started Sarcófago in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1985, shortly after being booted out of fellow death metal upstarts Sepultura, and igniting a bitter rivalry that would rage for years to come. The band's lineup was in constant flux early on, but by the end of the following year, Sarcófago had managed to record three promising demos, namely Satanic Lust, Black Vomit, and the notorious Christ's Death, all of which circulated in the tape-trading underground and helped the band gather a small but rabid following.

Bassist Gerald Minelli (aka Incubus), guitarist Zéber (Butcher), and drummer Eduardo (D.D. Crazy) were soon on board and Sarcófago signed with local metal imprint Cogumelo Records, which issued their debut full-length, I.N.R.I., in July 1987.

According to Wagner, the band split up in 1987 after recording the I.N.R.I. album and reformed in 1989.

 H O L O C A U S T O

In the beginning of their career, they incorporated a Nazi aesthetic, though they only did that in order to shock people (much like Sepultura, Escola Alemã, and others). Their style is somewhere between death, black and thrash metal, before such distinctions were drawn. Rodrigo Magalhães did lead vocals from first demo until "Campo de Extermínio".

After their first album, Holocausto moved towards a crossover/thrash sound. On "Tozago as Deismno", they mixed heavy guitars, with industrial and doom influences, along with heavy experimentalism. Afterwards, they changed their name to PexbaA and started to play avantgarde jazz/rock.

The band reformed in 2004, playing thrash metal, and returned to their early extreme style with 2016's "War Metal Massacre."

Marduk - Wormwood (2009) Picture Disc [2010]

Marduk is a black metal band from Norrköping, Sweden. The band formed in 1990 and released their first album in 1992. Their name is derived from the Babylonian god Marduk, patron deity of Babylon.

Marduk was formed by Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson in order to form the “most blasphemous band in the world”. Their musical style was that of a straightforward death metal influenced take on black metal music, but as the years progressed their style and imagery became more of a fast and intense form of black metal.

Marduk’s predominant lyrical topics are Satanism, anti-Christianity, blasphemy, death, Third Reich history, and World War II. The latter two are a later addition to their lyrical/conceptual themes, stemming from their 1999 release Panzer Division Marduk. Marduk have recorded further songs relating to those chapters of human history, such as “The Hangman of Prague” (moniker of Reinhard Heydrich – second in command of the SS – in his capacity as the de facto Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia), “Night of the Long Knives”, “Deathmarch” and others. On the Nightwing album the band samples a violently anti-semitic march by the fascist Iron Guard in Romania.

The band’s fixation on Nazi-era Germany has caused a great deal of controversy, leading to multiple performances being cancelled, and leaving the band unable to tour multiple countries in various parts of the world. Much of this controversy stems from a 1995 interview with Nordic Vision Magazine, in which guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson was quoted as saying “in Germany, where magazines as “Rock Hard” and “Metal Hammer” have decided that we are a facist band and refuse to print any ads with Marduk […] the reason for this is that in a German.

Wormwood is their eleventh studio album. It was recorded at Endarker Studio by Magnus Devo Andersson and released on 21 September in Europe and 13 October in U.S. by Regain Records. It is the first Marduk album to feature drummer Lars Broddesson. "Phosphorous Redeemer" was made available on the band's official MySpace page in the run-up to the album's release.

Overkill - I Hear Black (1993)

Overkill was formed in New Jersey when a previous D.D. Verni/Rat Skates (real names: Carlo Verni and Lee Kundrat - the stage names were tributes to favorite punk bands, the Ramones featuring Dee Dee Ramone, and the Damned, featuring Rat Scabies... Bobby Blitz was taken from The Dead Boys' Johnny Blitz! project) punk band called The Lubricunts, broke up in 1980 (there's a picture of the Lubricunts demo cover in the Wrecking Your Neck liner notes). D.D. quickly wanted to form a new band, so he put out an ad which was answered by guitarist Robert "Riff Thunder" Pisarek (who came up with the name Overkill), but he was quickly replaced by Dan Spitz and Anthony Ammendola.

Early covers (especially those done under the Virgin Killer name in the very very early days) were punk songs for the most part, including selections by the Ramones and The Dead Boys. By 1980, they had recruited two guitarists (names forgotten over time) and the set-list included songs by Motörhead ("Overkill", half of the Ace of Spades album, and others), Judas Priest ("Tyrant" was their closer for awhile), and later Iron Maiden and Riot, as well as a smattering of punk covers which were played with extra distortion, intensity, and concentration on riffs.

In 1981, guitarists Dan Spitz (later of Anthrax) and Anthony Ammendolo left the band and Rich Conte entered with Mike Sherry. At this point, they started writing originals, including "Grave Robbers", "Raise the Dead", "Overkill", and "Unleash the Beast Within". More originals would follow, including "Rotten to the Core". Somewhere around this time Rich and Dan left and Bobby entered with Joe somebody on guitars. The band became a staple at New York and New Jersey clubs around 1982 and soon Bobby lived up to his "Blitz" nickname, earning an ejection from the band for a few days in 1983.

Around this time, the fluorescent green logo was adopted; it was specifically chosen to stand out on a poster with lots of red logos of other bands on the bill.

The line-up would stay consistent until 1987 when "Rat" Skates left the band. He was replaced by Mark Archibole for a few gigs and then on a permanent basis Sid Falck, previously of Paul Di'Anno's Battlezone. Bobby Blitz once said that the only former member he misses is co-founder Rat Skates. Then in 1990, Bobby G. left and was replaced by Rob Cannavino and Merritt Gant (Faith or Fear).

This line-up lasted until 1992 when Tim Mallare came in on drums. Rob and Merritt both left the band in 1995 (Rob became a motorcycle racer and Merritt formed several other bands), being replaced by Joe Comeau (Liege Lord) and Sebastian Marino.

The band underwent a more groove-oriented stylistic shift with I Hear Black in 1993.
