Mayhem & Darkthrone - The True Legends In Black [split] (2000)

Darkthrone started as a death metal band, but by the end of 1990 and the beginning of 1991, when they were rehearsing the material that would eventually become Goatlord, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous and Fenriz developed interest to black metal. Soon they decided to abort the Goatlord sessions because the material didn't reflect what they felt, and started to compose the songs that were to be found on A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Dag Nilsen was the only member who still wanted to play technical death metal, so he recorded the bass lines for A Blaze in the Northern Sky and then left the band.
The band's name was inspired by a Danish zine from around 1985/86 called Blackthorn, written by the guys from the Danish band DesExult, as well as by the lyrics of the Celtic Frost song "Jewel Throne" (I'm the king, sitting in the dark hiding from the shadows of the wind/.../ As I gaze from the Jewel Throne to the portal of infinity).
Darkthrone are known for the fact that there have only been very few live appearances for various reasons. The very last concert to date took place in 1996, being a one-off event as well.
According to the December 2007 issue of Decibel Magazine, the band's logo was designed by Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates. This was confirmed by Lindberg himself in a 2014 interview with the MetalSucks Podcast.

Mayhem was billed as Wolf's Lair Abyss for a few secret gigs during the Wolf's Lair Abyss tour.
Founded by Jørn Stubberud (Necrobutcher), and Kjetil (Manheim) under the name Musta, which they changed to Mayhem after Øystein Aarseth (Euronymous) joined in. The band name is taken from the Venom song, "Mayhem with Mercy".
During the early years, the band used either session vocalists Messiah or Maniac for live/studio commitments, and played either instrumentally, or with Necrobutcher or Euronymous on vocals during rehearsals.
By late 1987 both Manheim and Maniac had left the band, their positions were filled temporarily by members of Vomit, before vocalist Dead, and drummer Hellhammer took over in 1988.
Dead committed suicide in 1991 by shooting himself in the mouth with a shotgun after cutting his wrists with a knife. The shells were given to him by Varg Vikernes (Count Grishnackh), who knew that Dead used to practice with a shotgun in the forest close to the house where the members of Mayhem lived. His body, along with a suicide note saying "Excuse all the blood", was discovered in his room. Euronymous took some pictures (one of them appearing as the cover of the infamous "Dawn of the Black Hearts" bootleg album) of the suicide scene. A legend was born, and it was said that Euronymous had cooked and eaten pieces of Dead's brain. It was also said that fragments of Dead's skull had been collected and made into necklaces that both Euronymous and Hellhammer wore as a tribute to Dead. Of course it is doubtful that the truth was as macabre as people would like to believe regarding the cannibalism, but it is a confirmed fact that necklaces were made, and that pictures were taken.
With the media and police attention following Dead's suicide, Necrobutcher (Jørn Stubberud) decided to leave the band. Dead was replaced by Occultus (Stian Johansen), ex-singer of Thyabhorrent and partner of Euronymous in the "Helvete" shop. He sang and played bass in Mayhem for a few months, but soon left. With the band's need for musicians, Varg Vikernes (Burzum) joined as bassist and participated on the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album, along with Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar who performed on the album but never fully committed to the band at the time.
On August 10th, 1993, Varg Vikernes murdered Euronymous in his apartment with Snorre W. Ruch acting as an accomplice. Their relationship before the murder was tense, as their friendship and musical relationship started going downhill. Vikernes, who had started to play bass in Mayhem, killed him due to a number of alleged reasons: over a girl, jealousy of Euronymous's position in the Inner Circle, Euronymous owing him money, Euronymous not releasing Burzum's albums on time. Euronymous was found in his underwear, with stab wounds inflicted with a knife. Varg was rumoured to try and outdo the murder Faust of Emperor committed. At his trial, Vikernes came into court with his long hair made into pigtails, and denying his involvement in Euronymous's death. He giggled and laughed throughout the trial. He was convicted of the murder and was sentenced to 21 years in prison (the maximum possible sentence in Norway). When police arrested Vikernes, he was found with over 150 kilograms of stolen dynamite and alleged plans to destroy Nidarosdomen, a large Christian church in Trondheim, on a religious holiday. Although, Varg Vikernes has a different story to the reasons for killing Euronymous (see http://www.burzum.org for articles Varg composed himself explaining the murder).
After the trial, Euronymous's parents asked Hellhammer to remove the bass lines that Varg had recorded. He told them he would record new bass lines himself, but the truth is that he didn't know how to play the instrument, so the album remained the same, featuring Varg on it. Other rumours about Occultus playing the new bass lines are also false, he never played a note with the band during his time in Mayhem, according to Hellhammer.
Despite the death of the band's founder and main driving force, Hellhammer later reactivated the band, with Maniac and Necrobutcher rejoining alongside new guitarist Blasphemer. Mayhem's musical style changed drastically over the years that followed. In 2004, Maniac left again and Atilla Csihar rejoined Mayhem on a full-time basis.
Mayhem's live show, particularly in the days of Euronymous and Dead, has always been known for featuring heavy atmospheric effects such as severed pig heads impaled on wooden spikes. Dead's clothes were buried days/weeks before the show, and were exhumed decayed, soiled, and full of insects. Pieces of rotting meat were thrown into the audience. Dead ravens were placed in a bag so Dead could continually smell decay and death. Members were also noted to cut themselves onstage. While the more extreme aspects of the show has been toned down in later years, Attila Csihar remains infamous for his theatrical performances and stage costumes.
Interesting fact: Euronymous is responsible for getting many nowadays famous bands (Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor) into black metal and/or influenced them to change their musical style from death metal to black metal. He's considered to be responsible for sparking the whole Norwegian black metal movement and making it what it is today.
Despite once playing in the strongly anti-Christian band Mayhem, early vocalist Kittil Kittilsen (ex-Kvikksølvguttene, Vomit) left the music scene around 2000 and became a fundamentalist Christian and warns people of the dangers of playing in a rock/pop band regardless of what the lyrics/ideology is about.

Nervosa - Time Of Death [ep] (2012) [Reissue 2017]

All female power thrash metal trio from São Paulo, formed by Fernanda Lira (bass and vocals), Prika Amaral (guitar and backing vocals) and Luana Dametto (drums).
Despite being part of bands from different styles previously, like death metal and crossover, all members see in the compositions of Nervosa a same passion: thrash metal. With strong influences coming from bands of this genre’s classic school, the girls of the band seek to rescue the best in heavy music.
Prika Amaral started the band in February 2010, and in July 2011 Fernanda Lira took on the bass and vocals of Nervosa, and only then, finally with the full team, the band started working as a professional band – writing songs, recording, playing shows.
In March 2012, the band released their first music video for “Masked Betrayer,” which reached the incredible mark, for a new band, of 20,000 views in just one week, prompting them to receive an Honorable Mention from YouTube, as the 17th most watched clip of musicians of the week and 55th most viewed in the month of March of that year.
Thanks to the notoriety gained through their hard work, Nervosa in the following months, achieved a great accomplishment: the contract with the Austrian label Napalm Records, which has in their roster names like Cavalera Conspiracy, WASP, Grave Digger, Moonspell, Huntress, among many others.
Still in 2012, the band’s first record, a demo with 3 tracks, was released in Brazil on CD independently, under the title ’2012′ in August, and abroad by Napalm Records on turquoise vinyl, and by Nuclear Blast in a clear version, both under the title ‘Time Of Death’, whose cover art was designed by artist Andrei Bouzikov, who has worked with several bands previously, such as Municipal Waste.
Nervosa ends the year 2012 with a very positive balance with more than 50 concerts made around the country, among them, sharing the stage with bands like Exodus, Raven, Grave, Samael (in the festival Roça n Roll), Exumer and Artillery , among others.
After a period of exchanging drummers, the one who assumed the position in February of 2013 was Pitchu Ferraz.
Thus, the year 2013 began with a renewed vibe, and the band continued to promote their EP throughout the country, with shows in several states, and even a tour over the North and Northeast of the country, as well as sharing the stage with other great Names of the world scene such as Korzus, Ratos de Porão and also Destruction, Exciter, Blaze Bayley, Kreator, DRI And Benediction.
In 2014, the girls finished the recording of their first full lenght, titled Victim of Yourself, which had 12 tracks and whose cover was signed again by the artist Andrei Bouzikov, and the booklet was produced by the Brazilian artist Rafael Romanelli.
The album was released in March of that same year by Napalm Records in Europe and North America, and by other record companies and distributors in South America, Japan and Russia. In addition to the traditional CD format, 4 vinyl versions were also released – in black, blue, red and clear colors, distributed by Napalm Records itself and also by Nuclear Blast.
Two clips were released throughout the album’s promotion: ‘Death!’, which achieved record-breaking views among the band’s videos (over 1 million views), and ‘Into Moshpit’, a live video compilation that demonstrates all the energy of the girls in a live show.
These two singles, added to the other tracks of the album, made ‘Victim of Yourself’ reach great response from the metal audience, as well as prominence and good ratings in major magazines in the segment around the world, such as European Metal Hammer, Rock Hard , Terrorizer and Bass Guitar, the American Revolver and Guitar World and even the Japanese Burrrn, as well as the Brazilian Roadie Crew, Bass Player, Guitar Player and Modern Drummer magazines.
The good reception of the album was essential to result in a long and intense tour that lasted for the years 2014 and 2015. To promote the album in Brazil, the band played in 17 states, went through 7 countries in Latin America and made a A successful European tour with 51 shows in 60 days, including a total of 16 countries in the continent, including performances at some of Europe’s biggest summer festivals such as Summerbreeze, Brutal Assault, Metal Days, Obscene Extreme, among others.
The ‘Victim of Yourself’ promotion tour also took the band to the United States for the first time in 2016. Starting with two presentations on the already traditional ’70000 tons of metal’ cruise, leaving from Florida and going to Jamaica, the tour also passed through much of the West Coast of the country and also to the South, with more than 30 concerts from the state of Washington all the way to the state of Florida. In addition, other new territories were explored by Nervosa, such as Mexico, where the band toured for two weeks, and other locations such as Puerto Rico and Peru.
In 2016, the band recorded their new album, titled ‘Agony’. Recorded and produced in the states of California and Oregon in the United States by Brendan Duffey and mixed and mastered by thrash master Andy Classen, the album had its world premiere announced for June 3 by the Austrian label Napalm Records.
This same year was also very intense regarding shows to promote their latest album: there were more than 160 shows only in 2016.
‘Agony’ promotion tours include a European summer tour with almost 50 dates, a full month of shows on the US East Coast and also in Canada, as well as two European tours as special guests of the German band Destruction for a total of almost 60 shows, part of them being alongside the great bands Flotsam & Jetsam and Enforcer.
In 2017, who officially takes over the drums of the band is the competent Luana Dametto, who already joins it participating in the writing of the new Nervosa album, scheduled to be out in 2018, and also facing the second leg of Agony promotion tours.
The ‘World in Agony Tour’ will be a tour that aims exploring several countries and continents around the world. So far are already announced the legs in Brazil (which has been taking place since February this year), in Mexico and Central America in May and June and in Europe during the months of July, August and part of September. In addition, plans are already being worked out to take the tour back to the US and Canada, as well as to South America and also in new territories, such as Asia.

Time Of Death

Civil war, internal chaos
The city is dominated
People flee, people die
Guilty and innocent
In a place without opportunities
In a place without hope
We can only wait for death

Threatening reaction
Threatening respect
Cause an extremely keen sense of vengeance
Time of death

Real life, real situation
Critical mind, critical obliteration
Real life, real situation

Possessed - Beyond The Gates / The Eyes Of Horror (Ed. 2008)

Possessed are hailed as the godfathers of the death metal genre. They are considered by some to be the first death metal band and that the name of the genre comes from their first demo, entitled Death Metal.

Possessed was formed by guitarist Mike Torrao, drummer Mike Sus. Jeff Becerra from Blizzard came into the band, and soon was joined by second guitarist Brian Montana. This lineup recorded the 1984 demo Death Metal and also an appearance on the Metal Blade Records Metal Massacre VI compilation with the song "Swing of the Axe".

At this time, Brian Montana was let go due to his sub par guitar playing and also because he did not fit in well with the band's image. Larry Lalonde, previously in Blizzard with Jeff, was brought in and after some gigs with Exodus and other bands, the band was signed by Combat Records, and the legendary Seven Churches was recorded. After some US touring with Slayer, Venom, and others, a second album was released, Beyond the Gates. This album led to a European tour with Voivod and Deathrow, and a US tour with Dark Angel, the legendary Gates of Darkness tour, as Dark Angel was touring in support of Darkness Descends.

Tensions were rising within the band and a final EP, The Eyes of Horror, was released. There were two gigs with Megadeth, and then Possessed broke up, with Mike Torrao putting the band on hold. Larry went to Blind Illusion, where he found Les Claypool and founded Primus, of all bands!

In 1991, Torrao recruited Bob Yost on bass, Walter Ryan on drums, and Mark Strausberg on guitar, and recorded a demo tape and played three gigs. Then, Yost left, and was replaced by Paul Perry, and a second demo was recorded in 1993, and that was just about the end. Jeff Becerra was shot in a robbery and paralyzed from the chest down, but has had a successful career since. Mike Torrao works as a landscaper and has some musical projects happening too, while Mike Sus got a degree in psychology, and is a counselor in a drug treatment clinic. Possessed reformed with Jeff's long-time friends from Sadistic Intent filling in on all instruments, while Jeff only handled vocals due to his disability.

After the album Beyond the Gates was released, Larry LaLonde started to have guitar lessons with Joe Satriani, who ended up producing the EP The Eyes of Horror.

Abhorrence was formed by Rangel Arroyo and Fernando Arroyo in 1997. After a few member changes, Marcello Marzari joined, completing the band's lineup. That same year the band recorded the debut demo, Ascension, which was re-released on CD in 1998 by Wild Rags Records.

In 1999, Abhorrence recorded a second demo titled Triumph in Blasphemy. The following year, the band was chosen by Relapse Records as one of the four most promising underground death metal acts from Brazil and was selected to be part of the Brazilian Assault compilation in 2000.

Abhorrence later signed a deal with Evil Vengeance to record their first full-length album, Evoking The Abomination, which was released in 2000 (and re-released in 2001). After the album was released, the band went on hiatus until 2004 until they recorded two new tracks for an upcoming promo.
