Hour Of Penance - Pageantry For Martyrs [2005]

Formed in Rome in Italy in 1999 by Francesco De Honestis (Guitar), Enrico Schettino (Guitar), Mauro Mercurio (Drums), Mike Viti (Vocal / Bass).

Influenced at first by a combination of black and death metal, Hour of Penance would soon move away from those styles, and, being influenced by Cannibal Corpse, opt for a more up front and pummeling style. Their first demo hit the scene in 2000, and was followed by their first album, Disturbance, in 2003. By this time they had laid the groundwork by playing the Swedish death metal festival at Gothenburg and signed with Spanish label Xtreem Music. A well-received effort, Disturbance was followed by the album Pageantry for Martyrs in 2005, which won the band some scene awards.
As of 2015 the band's lineup contains no original members. The last founding member was drummer Mauro Mercurio who left in 2010 after the release of Paradogma. The most senior band member is guitarist Giulio Moschini who has been with the band since 2004 and played on all albums except Disturbance and the 2000 demo.

Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (1998)

Nile formed in their hometown of Greenville in 1993, from the ashes of a previous band, Morriah, in which Karl Sanders played since the 1980s. The name of this band may have been taken from the Nile river. Their music and lyrics are inspired by Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern mysticism, history, religion, and ancient art, as well as the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Nile released a thrash-influenced demo called Worship the Animal; it was reissued in 2011. Karl Sanders (guitars/vocals), Chief Spires (bass/vocals), and Pete Hammoura (drums) released their Festivals of Atonement EP in 1995, leading Nile to a southwestern tour in support of other metal acts such as Obituary, Deicide, and Broken Hope.

The EP Ramses Bringer of War was released by Visceral Productions in 1997. Visceral were due to release the full-length Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, but went out of business later that year. However, Relapse Records was open to releasing it in early 1998, giving Nile a wider distribution and a chance to tour with Incantation and Morbid Angel.

Cryptopsy - Once Was Not (2005)

Cryptopsy was formed in 1988 by drummer Mike Atkin, guitarrist Steve Thibault and vocalist Dan Greening (who would later take the name "Lord Worm" because he would dig up and ingest worms on stage) under the name "Necrosis". John Todds later joined on bass. The band released several demos, including Mastication and Heterodontism (1989), Realms Of Pathogenia (1991) and Necrosis (1992). The band made their first live appearance in 1992, and changed their name to "Cryptopsy" the same year.
Atkin, whose musical direction was heading in a more Thrash/Speed Metal vein, left the band and was replaced by Flo Mounier (introduced to the band by Todds), whose "high speed and hard hitting drumming" style would mark the beginning of the Cryptopsy sound. Todds left Necrosis shortly thereafter and retired from music to focus on his family. Guitarist Dave Galea also joined the band.
